Swing dat hammer--hunh--
This poem depicts the inner monologue of a chain gang worker as he contemplates his tragedy and the tragedy of his family. Here, the “hunh” appears to be uttered by the prisoners, the hammer swingers. It is the sound of the performed action, and emphasizes that action’s rhythmic, percussive and physically demanding qualities.
