This is our clue that Holden did not, as many readers claim, end up at a hospital for psychiatric treatment but rather for tuberculosis treatment. However, Holden could be hedging the truth, he’s a textbook example of an Unreliable Narrator. The final two chapters make it sound as if he had a breakdown or near-breakdown as well — it is likely that, while he is there because of his TB, he is at least under some form of psychiatric evaluation.
