About

Genius Annotation

Walking talking rabbits, time travel, schizophrenia, bizarre therapy sessions – this film has it all. But the one thing it is missing is clarity. If you have seen this film you probably love it. Gyllenhaal gives a superb performance in what is definitely one of the most unusual films of its time. This is a must-see film – regardless of how difficult it is to understand. However, we’ve cracked the case and now most of your questions should be answered.

How could Roberta Sparrow write a book as she would to forget everything.
Genius Answer

Roberta Sparrow’s book on time travel resulted in her being fired from teaching – hence Monitoff’s reluctance to “continue this conversation” with Donnie. Then, as Donnie’s dad explains at the family dinner table, “she became a total recluse”. The film’s characterisation of Roberta Sparrow during the events between Donnie’s interaction with the jet engine suggest she suffered from dementia, which in no way conflicts with her having written the book in her youth.
