I wanted to get somebody for him. I wanted to go into the room where he lay and reassure him: “I’ll get somebody for you, Gatsby. Don’t worry. Just trust me and I’ll get somebody for you——”
Carraway shows how much empathy he has for Gatsby. He knew how desperate and lonely Gatsby was in his life. Since Gatsby did confide in him before, Carraway feels he is responsible for finding someone who cared about Gatsby. Carraway wants to prove to Gatsby that he did not work for nothing and was not alone in the world.
