I have heard what the talkers were talking, the talk of the
Beginning and the end,
But I do not talk of the beginning or the end.

from Walt Whitman – Song of Myself on Rap Genius

Meaning

Whitman talks of the now. People claim to know the origins of things they never saw or the finale’s to things they will never see. Another term often used for this is “Alpha and Omega” which is used in reference to God, being that he is the beginning and the end, the creator and the destroyer. Whitman is saying that he does not know of God’s intentions or thoughts and so he doesn’t talk about them.

Whitman has had a strong influence on many writers over the years, an example of this can be seen in a similar reference made by artist Rockwell Knuckles in his song Sorta Invincible.
