from Martin Luther King, Jr – Letter From Birmingham Jail on Rap Genius

Meaning

Dr. King was a young, new pastor in Montgomery Alabama in 1955 when the Bus Boycott began after the arrest of Rosa Parks. He did not choose to lead the protest movement but instead was elected to lead it because he was the newest black preacher in town and there was less “dirt” on him than the other preachers. His work in Montgomery was the starting point for his work in the Civil Rights Movement.
