Thrush, nightingale, or lark

from Morri Creech – Song and Complaint on Rap Genius

Meaning

The line refers obliquely to Hardy’s darkling thrush, Keats' nightingale, and Shelley’s skylark. The bird in this poem is purely symbolic and—as is suggested in a later section—merely a fiction, a figment of imagination. There are no nightingales in North America.
