learned in your ear
This makes absolutely no sense at all. What the author was thinking: well, it sounded pretty. But you can always dig deeper and make something up.
Like, well, at this point, the syphilis obviously made the narrator’s brain mush. So he can’t possibly remember what words he learned/didn’t learn. On second thought, the writer is pretty brilliant. And I hear he’s damn good looking.
