Genesis 1:27: So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

from Holy Bible (KJV) – Genesis 1 on Rap Genius

Meaning

Critics have called this line a contradiction, since man and woman are created at the same time here, while the man is created first in Chapter 2.

A response is that this verse does not imply a timeline.

Some people have used this verse as evidence that God created man and woman to have equal value.

Others have used this verse to suggest that God is both male and female, since both are created in his image. But Christians generally consider God to be outside concepts like male and female, and consider terms like “he”, or the fact that he is a male when in human form, as simply for our own understanding.

“In the image of God” is usually interpreted to mean non-physical features; rationality, a moral will, original righteousness, human dominion over the earth, a spiritual nature, the capacity for a special relationship with God, and so on.
