I do it exceptionally well.
Dying is no less of a skill than anything else in life. Sylvia has attempted it a few times and now considers herself exceptional, a “pro,” at the act of suicide (even though she’s failed twice). She feels that suicide is easy enough to do, but it’s doing it “theatrically” that makes it great art.
Sure enough, Plath’s eventual exit at age 30 (leaving out food and milk for her sleeping kids, sticking her head in her oven and turning on the gas — a gesture with overtones of both fairy tales and the Holocaust) has become one of the most notorious deaths in literary history.
