The number 42 was special to Lewis Carroll, to whom — as Reverend Dodgson — that number of course also was associated with Thomas Cranmer’s 42 articles. Cranmer for some time “forgot” these articles in order to save his life. Nevertheless Cranmer was burned at the stake. Carroll associated the Baker (who forgot his 42 boxes as well as his name) with “hot” names like “Fry me!”, “Fritter my wig!”, “Candle-ends” and “Toasted-cheese”. And the Reverend Dodgson rejected what became of Cranmer’s Articles: The 39 Articles of the Anglican Church.
