Genius Annotation

King Duncan confirms the execution of Cawdor and reflects that he had trusted the traitor completely. Macbeth and Banquo arrive and the King praises them both highly, inviting himself to Macbeth’s castle as a gesture of respect. He also names Malcolm his heir to the throne.

Macbeth secretly reflects that Malcolm now stands between him and power–a hint that he intends to fulfill the witches' prophecy. He departs to travel home and prepare for the King’s visit.
