Myriel was Bishop of D——

from Victor Hugo – "M. Myriel" on Rap Genius

Meaning

“D——” refers to Digne, a commune of France. The novelistic convention of striking out real-life proper names, with the exception of the first letter, is an old-fashioned one intended primarily to prevent legal trouble for the author. Though rarely seen today, the convention was revived in Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 novel The Corrections, which refers to the shady “W—— Corporation” (in context clearly the “Windows corporation,” or Microsoft).
