Meaning

A metrical unit (or “foot”) containing two unstressed syllables followed by one stressed syllable, as in the phrase “badda-BING, badda-BOOM.” Anapestic meter is often used in comic verse: “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” a number of Dr. Seuss books, and Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark are all good examples.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house

Limericks are also structured around anapests:

There once was a man from Berlin
