And companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ,
“companion in tribulation”– The early Christians were persecuted at first alongside the Jews (see Claudius) and then aside from them (see Nero). John is affirming that he too has suffered alongside of the church.
“and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ”-
Just before and in the early 1st century A.D., there were many uprisings from the Jewish against the Roman empire. (see Maccabean Revolt) and also many Messianic movements. These were all political movements, attempting to throw off Roman rule. They all failed. Eventually the Jewish temple in Jerusalem was destroyed around 70 A.D.
Jesus told his followers that his kingdom was “not one of this world” (John 18:36). This conception of kingdom, one of peace and love, would have been wildly different to the Roman conception of power. The Roman’s were concerned with physical prowess and power over others.
