While confined here in the Birmingham city jail

from Martin Luther King, Jr – Letter From Birmingham Jail on Rap Genius

Meaning

Martin Luther King had been arrested more than a few times at this point and even spent a short amount of time serving a 45-day sentence in Albany, Georgia.

Most of these arrests stemmed from parading without a permit. By 1955, most of the southern states had been ordered to desegregate by the Supreme Court. However, this never quite took place to the extent at which MLK thought was appropriate, causing him to lead protests all throughout the south.
