Be it Englewood or Egypt, Bedstuy or Baghdad

from Lupe Fiasco – Ayesha Says (Intro) on Rap Genius

She compares the ghetto in America to war-torn hotbeds in the Middle East. Englewood is one of the neighborhoods that made Chicago (Lupe’s home town) the murder capital. From the Klu-Klux Klan, to the rise of black gangs, and now to the prevalence of Latino gangs. Bedstuy is a neighborhood in Brooklyn that’s known for being rampant with crime in the past, especially in the 70s and 80s.
Shift to the present time. Baghdad is the capital of Iraq, and during the war it was possibly the most televised city on international news channels. The country of Egypt is currently in political chaos as it is ravaged by an ongoing revolution. This is a theme that will run throughout the album.
